Interior Inspiration Videos

(Videos have sound. You may want to mute.)

These videos and photos represent an overall feel of comfortable, inviting, and casual.

I want the overall feel to be light and airy but with a palette that fits into the natural area that we are building in. A warm neutral palette of light and medium beiges and light-medium browns is what most of these videos show. Darker “neutrals” of warm gray, navy and dark green may be included in some rooms. I’m inspired by Amber Lewis, Shea McGee, etc. but will want the decor to have a bit more color or contrast than is usually found in their recent designs. I was raised on a farm so I want the decor to allow for an occasional farmhouse or antique piece. Kendall’s career has been in the rail industry so he also has some framed antique maps that will need a home outside of his office.

We want comfortable furniture. We are hoping for architecture or wall treatments in every room that will be catch the eye even before any furniture and art arrives. Our style might be considered transitional, but leaning traditional in some areas like wall molding and tile layout patterns. Small hints of craftsman style might be used as wainscoting or door frame style. I will be choosing off-white or white bathroom tiles to keep the look fairly timeless. Maybe I’ll go bolder in a powder bath.

Our furnishing choices might fall within the description of Modern (Organic) Cottage. I found and edited this list online that seems to fit what we already like. (from https://havenly.com/blog/modern-cottage )

  • Cozy, sink-into-me furniture
  • Wood for organic warmth
  • Natural textures like linen, straw, jute, and shearling
  • Neutral colors like whites, beiges, blacks, blues, and sage
  • A bit of vintage decor
  • Mixed metals, especially brass alongside matte black
  • Artisan accents like bowls, vases, and other collected pottery
  • Subtle patterns, like a hint of plaid or floral
  • Spaces for greenery and fresh flowers

The main living space walls will be an off-white or light beige. Trim will be a lighter, coordinating white. Kendall’s office will have built-in cabinetry that might be white oak, or a green or blue. My office/sewing room will be a lighter palette to coordinate with some existing white cabinets we are bringing in.

We will choose all new living space furniture, kitchen counter stools, and breakfast furniture. Kendall’s office will need a new desk and cabinetry. All bedrooms will be furnished with existing furniture (fairly new).

I love this kitchen.

Beautiful colors, hardware. I like the simple hood.

Undecided about counter-as-backsplash. I could do it behind the cooktop.

Beautiful matte floor.

If I do all wood, I’ll need breaks in the cabinet run for a light counter and backsplash to break it up.

This inset sink area is interesting. Does that put too many steps to the island prep area?

Dislike vaulted kitchens. Prefer flat or beamed ceiling in kitchen.

Like: extra seating area between kitchen and living.

Like: the open end of the covered patio which still allows light into great room.

Another example of extra seating between kitchen and living area.

I’m fascinated by this wrap-around back kitchen. I don’t know if it is feasible.

Would not do much open shelving.

I like the no-hearth fireplace.

Fireplace is a bit too linear for me, but I like that it brings the mantle down low enough to put a TV over the fireplace. (This mantle is too low, in my opinion.)

I won’t be using stone/brick inside.

Love the master closet use of space. Three-tiered clothing racks.

Like the pass-through shower behind the tub. For us, it would have to be closed for a steam shower.

Like: Warm color scheme but with contrast.

I love a lot about this kitchen. Sink under window and sink in pantry.

Not likely to do double islands. Prefer second space between living and kitchen to be used for either seating or breakfast table.

Still unsure about formal dining room.

There is a lot of contrast in this video that doesn’t appeal to me.

Dislike range hood, fireplace and office style. We are more traditional.

Nice laundry room with many of the features I will try to fit in.

I like the sliding glass laundry door that doesn’t look like a barn door. (Hidden track?)

Would like the master closet to have entry to laundry.
